It is considered that Iceland is the home to one-third of the lava that ever flowed on Earth. As much as 25% of the Iceland surface is covered with volcanoes. Today, the country has 32 volcanic systems comprising 130 different volcanic mountains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of activity, some are still active,<\/span> and others are considered extinct. In contrast, in terms of structure,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> some are stratovolcanoes (mountainous with cone-shaped peaks), others are covered with glaciers, and there are those with flat tops and steep sides (tuyas).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00d6r\u00e6faj\u00f6kull is the largest active volcano in <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iceland.org\">iceland<\/a> and also the home of the highest peak (2119 meters). However, because of their frequent activity, the most well-known volcanoes are Hekla,<\/span> with 18 eruptions in recent history, and Katla,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with 20 eruptions since the settlement of Iceland.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is a list of the volcanoes in Iceland:<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li href=\"https:\/\/www.iceland.org\/geography\/volcano\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">Volcano<\/a> in Iceland is located in the central parts of the country. The Askja Volcano&#8217;s<\/span> coordinates are 65.0111\u00b0 N, 16.7485\u00b0 W. Tours and Tour Guides for the Askja Volcano in Iceland are available. The Askja Volcano is active. It has erupted several times throughout history,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and its last eruption occurred in 1961. Interestingly, the Askja volcano was not of particular interest until March 29, 1875, when its eruption resulted in ash and tephra polluting the air all the way to Middle Europe. After the eruption, a smaller caldera formed, and it was filled with water forming the \u00d6skjuvatn <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"lake\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iceland.org\/geography\/lake\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">lake<\/a>, which is 220 meters deep today is the second deepest lake in the country. The lake raised interest in scientific circles, and in 1907 two German scientists disappeared while exploring the \u00d6skjuvatn lake in a small boat. Today, the Askja Volcano area is used for training NASA astronauts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iceland.org\/geography\/volcano\/bardarbunga\/\">B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga Volcano in Iceland is located in the southeast. The B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga Volcano&#8217;s coordinates are 64.6410\u00b0 N, 17.5280\u00b0 W. B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga is a stratovolcano and a part of a 200 kilometers long and 25 kilometers wide volcanic system. Many eruptions mark the active history of the B\u00e1r\u00f0arbunga Volcano, with the last one occurring between 2014 and 2015. The Brennisteinsfj\u00f6ll Volcano&#8217;s coordinates are 63.9233\u00b0 N, 21.8128\u00b0 W. Brennisteinsfj\u00f6ll is a small volcanic system with shield volcanoes and <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"crater\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iceland.org\/geography\/crater\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">crater<\/a> rows. The system is 45 kilometers long, 10 kilometers wide,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and covers an area of 280 square kilometers. The Brennisteinsfj\u00f6ll Volcano&#8217;s last eruption occurred in 1341.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iceland.org\/geography\/volcano\/eldfell\/\">Eldfell<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eldfell Volcano (Hill of Fire) in Iceland is located on an <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"island\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iceland.org\/geography\/island\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">island<\/a> off the south coast. The Eldfell Volcano&#8217;s coordinates are 63.4321\u00b0 N, 20.2494\u00b0 W. The volcanic cone formed on 23 January 1973 during an unexpected eruption that caused havoc in the air travel and resulted in the complete evacuation of the Heimaey island. The heat from the lava was used to make hot water and generate electricity. The 5-months long eruption added land to the Heimaey island, making it bigger than it was for around 20%. The Eldgj\u00e1 Volcano&#8217;s coordinates are 63.9664\u00b0 N, 18.6082\u00b0 W. Eldgj\u00e1 is 40 kilometers long and the largest volcanic canyon in the world. It was discovered in 1893 by \u00deorvaldur Thoroddsen. Within the volcanic canyon, there is a stunning <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"waterfall\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iceland.org\/geography\/waterfall\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">waterfall<\/a> called \u00d3f\u00e6rufoss. The Esjufj\u00f6ll Volcano&#8217;s coordinates are 64.2700\u00b0 N, 16.6500\u00b0 W. The Esjufj\u00f6ll Volcano is a subglacial volcano with an ice-filled caldera of 40 square kilometers. The Esjufj\u00f6ll Volcano is part of Iceland&#8217;s Or\u00e6fi Volcanic Belt and is considered to be a strict nature reserve. The Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull Volcano&#8217;s coordinates are 63.6314\u00b0 N, 19.6083\u00b0 W. Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull is completely covered with ice which feeds many outlet glaciers, including G\u00edgj\u00f6kull and Steinholtsj\u00f6kull. The crater has two main peaks named Gu\u00f0nasteinn (1.500 meters), H\u00e1mundur (1.651 meters), and Go\u00f0asteinn (1.497 m). The southern face of the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"mountain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iceland.org\/geography\/mountain\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">mountain<\/a> is rich in waterfalls, with Sk\u00f3gafoss being the most famous one. The Fagradalsfjall Volcano&#8217;s coordinates are 63.8933\u00b0 N, 22.2697\u00b0 W. Fagradalsfjall is a 40 kilometers long tuya volcano that formed during the Last Glacial Period. To be more precise, the Fagradalsfjall Volcano was quiet for 800 years, and then it suddenly erupted on March 19, 2021. The Fremrin\u00e1mur Volcano&#8217;s coordinates are 65.4297\u00b0 N, 16.6500\u00b0 W. The Fremrin\u00e1mur Volcano is set on a basalt plateau and marks the junction point between the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the Greenland\u2013Iceland\u2013Faroe Ridge. The Grensdalur system features many hot springs, pools, fumaroles, geysers, and mud pots and generates heat for the Hveragerdi town.
